Hi Everyone
I'm delighted at this new site to discuss MP-lifestyle issues!  Wonderful!

I was BIG tea drinker of black tea before MP, but also green, peppermint and chalmomile.  I drank up to 6 cups/day.  I completely gave up black tea when starting the MP and stuck to peppermint and chalmomile, thinking these were okay.  (I found a post that said it was fine - of course, I can't locate it now!).

But then I stumbled onto a post that said peppermint tea was NOT okay as it contains chlorogenic acid (http://www.marshallprotocol.com/view_topic.php?id=8941&forum_id=20&highlight=peppermint+tea)

So I now drink my peppermint tea only very weakly but intend to stop as soon as I get my hands on some jasmine tea (within the next few days).  I also now have 1 cup of weak black tea each day.

But I was wondering if I might be able to expand my options.  Does anyone else know of any other teas that are MP-safe?

Please note that "Chlorogenic Acid in Coffee is powerful Immune modulator" is a topic on the main MP site, the link is http://www.marshallprotocol.com/forum39/8252.html
There is some discussion of teas there, but recently the discussion has gone quite scientific.  I thought it would be more appropriate to post my 'lifestyle' and non-science-y question here.

regards, k

I used to be a huge tea drinker also, then decaffinated coffee.  Now I am addicted to green tea and have a variety of different companies in the pantry as each brand has a different taste to it.  That's as far as I got in the MP information due to brain fog.  Trevor said he drinks green tea so I went for that and decided I'd figure out the rest when my brain healed.

I've been on the MP not quite 3.5 years now, and can only describe my experience.  It may or maynot apply to you; the individual "pea soup" of CWD bacteria may explain this fact.

I didn't discontinue coffee until January 2007, when the tread was posted about Chlorogenic Acid CGA.  However, for about the next 12 months I consumed several cups of weak green tea; I put the teabag in the hotwater and let it steep no more than 15 seconds.  About March of 2008 I decided to really stop all CGA; after all, if it'w worth doing, it's worth doing well.  I substituted a little cocoa power (without sugar) and hot water, with a generous shot of half & half.  It satisfies me quite well; I sometimes have 3 cups a day.  Maybe I gained 3-5 pounds, but I'm still under the weight of pre MP.  And my D25 is nice & low. I also eat 4 oz of cheese a day; I'm really trying to build up the bones.

Other experience may vary, but I'm really trying to follow the MP to the letter and spirit of the instructions.  I already sleep so much better than pre MP; it's a vast improvement.  My bone mineral density exam showed far less bone loss, and in April 2008 the liver tests from the lab came back NORMAL.  Hooray for MP!

Hi,

I wonder how Rooibos tea rates as a safe drink.  It is from th South African 'Red Bush" and is very nice. Has anyone else tried this tea?

Best wishes Lynn

As I recall, roobios tea has already been discussed at this link "Chlorogenic Acid in Coffee is powerful Immune modulator" at the main MP site http://www.marshallprotocol.com/forum39/8252.html

I seem to recall that it was not recommended.

There are quite a few herbal/fruit blend teas around that should be okay.  Apple (but watch out for "Turkish apple" which contains a lot of sugar!), lemon/lemongrass, rosehip, chamomile.  Supermarkets have quite a good selection of herbal teas, there are also specialty tea shops that sell loose-leaf teas that tend to have a wider range of herbal teas (I can give you links for tea shops that have online shopping if you're interested).  :)

Thanks Shadowfeet.

I'm familiar with a number of shops which sell many many different types of loose leaf teas (one selling over 100).  The problem is knowing if any of them are 'absolutely' safe on the MP (or reasonably safe).

If peppermint tea can contain chlorogenic acid, then I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that many other herbal or fruit teas might contain chlorogenic acid or things which interfere with the MP in some way.  (Especially since so many fruit and herbal teas are promoted to 'aid/aid with this or that' and some are known to have particular links).  This is why I started this link... to see if anyone knows of a tea that I can drink with reckless abandon on the MP!  (e.g. like 7 cups a day, because I'm a tea person)

Personally I would prefer to stay away from fruit teas due to sugar content and chlorogenic acid risk.

Thanks.
regards, k

Thanks K,

I have looked at the link. It seems it is not recommended due to the antioxident qualities, so I will not drink it. On reading everything I get that small weak amouts of tea and coffee are O.K. to take.  I guess moderation in all things is the key

Thanks.  Lynn

Hi,

Except for my weak cup of jasmine green tea in the morning, I do avoid all teas.  Too many variables to mess with in my opinion.  I think I tried some Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime once, and re-decided to avoid em all.  (Can't remember what happened, but it wasn't good.)

Once every couple of weeks, I let myself have a treat of 1/2 cup of black coffee.  I find I can maintain this frequency without it leading to more frequent cheating.

And when I crave something--anything--besides another glass of water, I put a frozen strawberry in a cup and steep it in boiling water like you would a tea bag.  I find it a very satisfying diversion.  (Thank you Lori for the idea.)

- I do this as well, also in cold water.  It is very refreshing, especially lemon.

And just branching off the oils discussion had in the "Are essential oils in skincare ok?" topic, rosehip tea might might best be avoided.

"The rose hip is one of the best sources of natural Vitamin C! Apparently, it has 20 times the vitamin C of most citrus fruits. It also has vitamins A, D and K, in addition to antioxidant flavonoids."

Found on this tea website.

Maybe not the most reliable source, but along with the information in the previously mentioned topic found on rosehip.. I'd say it is to be avoided in all forms (I will be avoiding it anyway).

I don't recall anything saying we should avoid lemons (unless of course we drink lemon juice by the litre ).

I used to love coffee .... back when I could handle caffeine ... but now I really like Teeccino, a coffee substitute, especially with a little bit of cream and honey!

It does contain carob, which may have a tiny bit of CGA (It is in the "Very Low Chlorogenic acid" section of the list by Joyce Waterhouse).

It also contains chicory root and barley, like most coffee substitutes .... from what I can find, these are safe (Based on the "methods" section here http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/73/3/532). Apparently Droommix (fenugreek) tea and stinging nettle are OK too. I know fenugreek tea is good. I never had stinging nettle tea but it sounds delicious.

Stinging nettle contains querticin and seems to reduce inflammation. I would not make it a habit to take as it may slow down immune response. However, it may have been a help as a warm mouth 'wash' when I had swelling at the base of one of my molars during modified phase 1 (Oct07).

Fennugreek is also a medicinal herb. I would be careful with just about any herbal tea as they are all likely to have effects on the healing process in our bodies. What seems like something good because it makes us feel better may in fact be an immune suppressant (i.e., vit. D).

I think that is why Dr. Marshall writes of only 'dunking' his tea bag briefly for 'flavoring' his hot water... versus the familiar practice of 'steeping' our herbal tea for 5-15 minutes to gain the most 'benefit' from the herbs.

I hope that Teeccino doesn't have other stuff that might suppress the immune system. Here is the ingredient list:

roasted carob, organic roasted barley, chicory root, organic dates, almonds, organic chicory, organic figs, natural citrus flavor

MarkN,

The fact is that anything you put into, or even on your body has some effect on it.

We can't go totally overboard trying to understand and avoid everything--if we don't need to--we have enough already to worry about!

The basic position on the MP seems to be moderation and 'normal' quantities are ok. For example, you can eat an apple a day, but should avoid drinking multiple glasses of apple juice. Juice allows you to get large amounts of what is in the fruit (or vegetables) and takes you beyond moderation. In the case of apples, it would be the sugars that I would be concerned about!

Of course, for some people even 'normal' amounts of certain foods will be a problem. I remember Ival mentioning that he has lived totally on summer squash during some high IP (herx) periods on the MP. It was what he had to do to get through it. That was not moderation. Really, he was on a total 'fast' of everything except squash.

I believe Dr. Marshall has considered that even coffee ... in moderation ... is not considered the ultimate MP 'sin.' :)

So, with that perspective in mind, I am consulting my Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine (Chevallier) for the Teechino ingredients ...

roasted carob:
... carob pods are nutritious... sweet tasting and mildly laxative ...
... a decoction of the pulp can be used as an anti-diarrheal ...

roasted barley:
... is soothing to the throat ...
... can also be taken to clear mucus ...
... its demulcent quality also soothes inflammation of the gut and urinary tract ...
... particularly recommended as a treatment for fever ...
... chinese research suggests ... aid in treatment of hepatitis ...
... early 1900's [trials] indicate that barley may help control diabetes ...

chicory root:
... there is evidence to show that chicory root protects the liver from damage ...
... an excellent mild, bitter tonic for the liver and digestive tract ...
... therapeutically similar to dandelion root ...
... supporting the action of the stomach and liver ...
... cleansing the urinary tract ...
... taken for rheumatic conditions and gout ...
... a mild laxative, one particularly appropriate for children ...

dates, almonds, figs, citrus flavor:
... no entry

I really liked Teeccino when I tried it. After reviewing the traditionally understood effect of the ingredients, I would say--assuming you are not drinking multiple cups per day of this lovely drink--I'm not sure there is any reason to avoid it altogether.

Teecino, not exactly tasty in my opinion, tried, couldn't handle it. I think you can find it online or at a health food store.

Is it okay to drink one cup of Chai decaf tea a day?

It contains the following: decaffeinated black tea, cinnamon, ginger, roasted chicory, cloves, cardamom, natural flavour, nutmeg, black pepper and vanilla bean.

I find when I drink just one cup of this tea, in the evenings, I don't have insomnia and I get a real good nites sleep.

It's yummy too!!!!  :D

With respect to decaf black tea, it is not the caffeine that is the problem with being on the MP it is the chlorogenic acid.  See the following link/topic (it does discuss chlorogenic acid in black tea if you read through): "Chlorogenic Acid in Coffee is powerful Immune modulator" http://www.marshallprotocol.com/forum39/8252.html

As I recall, on that link (please check) it says somewhere it is okay to drink VERY weak black tea.  (I drink 1-2 cups of VERY VERY weak black tea most days - i.e. the tea bag is out before the water reaches the top of the cup).

I don't know about the other ingredients.  Although I recall reading somewhere that as ginger is an antiinflammatory to go easy on it on the MP (I don't know if the amount in your chai tea (there are many different varieties) would be significant or not).

Did you try doing some searches on all the sites? i.e. the main study site, the curemyth1 site, and this one?

Good luck!

regards, k
