Howdy, Fellow Mp-ers! How 'bout THIS for discussion, suggestion, and maybe a little nonsense thrown in?  After a wild experience this past week, I am planning to get some sort of official Medical Bracelet for my own safety as "a Sarc on the MP", should I ever end up in an ambulance myself!

First, let me tell you what happened: Oh the NOISE and PANIC at 2 a.m. when a drunk driver hit first a street light pole and then the tree in our front yard.  (Thank GOD for that tree!)  Two bodies ejected onto our lawn.  In the shock and adrenalin of the emergency, while calling 911, finding flashlights and blankets, etc.,  MY chest hurt (8), felt caved in, deeply concave(8); MY breathing was difficult(8). I realize a crisis naturally affects one's breathing, but as a Sarc, I knew good and well there was more than one emergency at our address!!!:X  By the time the EMT's hauled off those cowpokes, I had taken another Benicar and was breathing considerably better, so I chose NOT to beg a ride after all.  (I read in the newspaper the next day that they both survived, too.)

HOWEVER, I was interested in observing whether anyone the policemen or EMTs checked for ID, looked for a purse or billfold, or in the glovebox of the car, etc.   As far as I could see, THERE WAS NO WAY ANYONE WOULD HAVE FOUND EMERGENCY MEDICAL INSTRUCTIONS EVEN IF THEY HAD BEEN TAPED TO THE DASHBOARD!  (Call me paranoid, but that's something I have done with the "MP Instructions to Emergency Medical Personnel", so there'd be a prayer SOMEBODY would see it & send it in the ambulance with me).  NOW I think that is highly unlikely wishful thinking!

So I AM going to get a medical bracelet ASAP.  Have any of YOU out there in MP land already done this?  Of course what you can "put ON it" is very limited, so I'm hoping we can brainstorm enough to come up with something SUFFICIENT to get the job done RIGHT.  It needs to be a real "heads up"!

Hummm.  Maybe I will laminate that page and just tape it to my chest!  Then the bracelet could just say "Be SURE to look at her CHEST!"  OK, OK, so I've gone over the edge. Just joking!

So YOU got a better idea?!

Well, I think the emergency sheet has an emergency # for Doc Marshall.  So an emergency bracelet could contain "specialized marshall protocol - drug contraindications - Contact ___-___-____."

Just a thought.  Claire

P.S.  I thought I was safe by putting the emergency sheet in my billfold with Emergeny highlighted.  I also have it taped to the coat closet right inside my front door.

THANKS, eClaire!  I think you hit right on it, Girl!  Here's one nice website for the bracelets.  They also have a necklace line.  I liked your idea of posting the ER Instruction sheet hear the doors of your home, too..

I agree with Claire... but I'd include a loved one's number first (the loved one has the emergency sheet and knows a good amount about the MP of course), your prescribing doc's no. (assuming s/he is well versed on what to do) & TM's no.

& I sincerely hope no one ever gets into a situation like that!

The person who knows about the MP--my friend and caretaker who arrived not long ago and has watched and read everything about the MP--also has my MP user name and password so she can get emergency personnel into my PR to see what meds I've been taking.  It's occurred to me, as Natalie points out, that I should have her phone number on my emergency contact information.

P.S.  Natalie nice new photo!

I get my daughter's medical ID bracelet from http://www.fiddledeeids.com/ .  I see they have expanded and changed, but there's still a very nice one on page 4 of the women's section that actually looks like a piece of jewelry (but still with a medical alert tag).

Room is very limited on the bracelets.  I'm going to think a bit more about what would be best.  However, I tend to agree that major diagnosis,  on MP, and a phone number to someone knowledgeable would be good.

I agree, Natalie, nice new photo.  :)

I also had the thought to get a medical alert bracelet.  I think it is a wonderful idea. I haven't acted on it because I have been at  home for the past 8 months.  I will however be going back to work in another month, so I am going to do it.   Thanks for bringing this to my attention again.  I'll have to think about what to put.  Will let you know what I decide.

On the link provided by :)dette, I noticed a bracelet that allows you to put in a small folded piece of paper.

I had a similar bracelet once and created my own set up in a word file (measured and cut to fit of course).  This allowed me to mention that I could not tolerate fresh paint in the building, as it could be life threatening.  That bracelet eventually wore out and I never found another like it, and I wore it pre-MP b/c my mother used to worry I'd have a car accident and be taken unconscious to a hospital where fresh paint would kill me.

The other nice point about being able to insert your own text is that it allows you to change the text as the information changes.

Having a bracelet like this is a very smart thing to do and I'm glad the issue has been raised.

There is good information at the "Engraving Tips" page as to what to include and how to abbreviate, indicate, medical info.  http://www.fiddledeeids.com/page.html?id=10 .

Wow, now I wonder if my daughter and I will be wearing matching bracelets.

:shock:dette

P.S. Cowgirl, I'm glad you're OK.  What an awful experience.  I know how unsettling, not just witnessing such an incident is, but also being the one to take care until help gets there.  You can take comfort in knowing that your experience is helping others be better prepared!

I got a MedicAlert bracelet.  Apart from the number for the company to call and get my medical details (including the MP Emergency sheet), I got printed on it "Olmesartan medoxomil 40mg every 4 hours".

I definitely feel .... more comfortable / less anxious wearing this... in case anything should happen to me.

regards, k

A friend helped me find this person who designs medical jewelry. She is a nurse and verified information for clarity with other professionals. My doctor was pretty specific about what he wanted on medical id. We chose to put my husband's contact number on the inside of the bracelet for contact.

This designer makes beautiful jewelry and keeps the costs down. She worked long and hard to get all the information onto the bracelet. However, if you cannot fit it all on, put pertinent  information and directions to where something more extensive can be found.

My doctor said the important things are to stay on Benicar and to state the only antibiotics I can use.
