Lottis,

It has been rather amazing to me.  First, I'm not sure what brought this on all of a sudden, maybe she is just getting old, after all.  Yesterday, she did fine all day and so I didn't give Chloe another dose of Mino in the pm.  At 7:30 p.m. she had another seizure or mini stroke, whatever they are.  So I gave her a dose after, she did fine all night and I gave her another dose this morning.  So far she is normal as of 9:00 a.m.

My Mino capsule is 25mg.  She is a 6.5 lb Yorkie, so in guessing I have been giving her about 3mg of Mino.  I open up a soft dog treat and sprinkle a little of it on the treat.  She gobbles it up.  Yorkies are smart and I have to disguise her medicine or else she snubs it!  It is working, so I will keep it up.  As I said, at 14 years, anything was worth trying.  The vet had told me if we tried anti-convulsive meds and they didn't help, our only option was to do CT scans for a brain tumor or put her down.  One could certainly not take much of the 5 seizures a day I watched, it is heartbreaking!:( I'll keep you posted!  Deb

Hi :).
I am curious about the dosing. Maybe you can take a higher dose more frequently?

Here is the study I was mentioning;
http://www.medpagetoday.com/Neurology/Strokes/6835

"Minocycline at a dosage of 200 mg was administered orally for 5 days."

Lottis,

I had been thinking that the protective effect of Minocycline following a stroke would be parallel to using aspirin.

Perhaps it lowers the cytokine levels so there is less brain damage. I read that cytokine 'storms' have been implicated in the cognitive deficits found in severe cases of CFS (book: "Osler's Web").

Frequent dosing of Minocycline has different actions than the pulsed dosing.

A little calculation gives a hint to make that dose twice a day. :)

Lottis,

Thought I would post for you and others, the condition of my Yorkie.  I continued with the low dosing of Mino, 2x per day for six days.  When dealing with stroke recovery, humans are given dosage for five days, but I think I was a bit filled with anxiety to take her off of it, that last day!

She is fine and back to her normal self in appearance.  Has had no further seizures, which I have to believe now were mini-strokes as I had guessed.  She still seems to be having a bit of recovery with her muscles being weak, but that has improved tremendously.  She would flop down on the floor during all of this as if she was losing all muscle control.  Chloe also was disoriented during these episodes and has regained much of her wits as of late.  I had to watch her a few days ago when I let her outside, because she would get lost wandering around.  This morning I waited for her to return to the door as she normally would and this too is back to normal...!  Yay!

It is evident looking into her eyes, that she has bounced back.....we came very close to putting her down.....thank goodness we gave the Mino a shot.

Deb, how is Chloe, your Yorkie, doing today?
I read about the Cats that Cynthia is helping and it made me wonder about Chloe.

I think it would be useful to us, to try to gather all the Pet discussions in a forum by itself. I think a lot of us have pets and animals that we would love to help using the MP. :)

Is it possible to create a forum for animals and move all those topics there?
A quick search brought me these other threads on the topic:

Hi Lottis,

Well, we didn't think she was going to make it to her 14th birthday which was August 2nd...and she is still with us.

After two rounds of minocycline, she has had no seizures within the last month.  Her cataracts on her eyes have gotten so bad though since she started having these seizures that she cannot see and really has to be watched when she goes outside because she seems disoriented.   Tom lost her one night while I was out of town for over two hours...she had not gotten two far, across the street and on the next block because she moves so slow.  Thank goodness he did finally run across her.  Of course I had said that she needs to be watched when she goes out and of course he had to learn the hard way *wink*  Out looking for her at 2a.m. in the morning after putting in a long day at work.  Guess what?  Now he watches her!

It is just sad to watch these sweet things of ours aging...I will surely have a hard time of letting go of my beloved dog.

Yet, feel so much better that we have the seizing under control as she was pitiful to watch in that process.

I never could find a vet to help me so I thought I would set out on my own.

This is completely an experiment. I do not know if it will help or not. So far, it does not appear to be harmful to him in the least. I am only hoping, as a semi-last resort.

I put my Standard Poodle, “Tucker” on the MP last week. I did not know if he could handle Benicar so I started him real slow. He was diagnosed with Hypothyroid. I have noticed many symptoms including joint pain and severe intestinal distress and rapid weight gain.

He went from being a very handsome, winning, show dog, to a limping, fatigued guy within just a few months after being neutered.

9 days on the MP. So far, so good. My cat is doing good on the MP, maybe it will help my dog as well. I will have his Thyroid retested in about 6 months and see if we are on the right track.

I will be happy to post Tucker's progress, dosages, IP, etc if you would like to know.

Hi :)
It would be great to hear more from you and Tucker, so keep posting here about the progress.
When did he get the hypothyroid diagnose? Was it shortley after he was neutered? Did he have any signs of this diagnose before that?

I have a special heart for Poodles since I have had two in the family, and I need not say more about that, you will know how I feel. ;)

Thank you Lottis, Yes, Poodles are pretty special to me too. But then all critters are. :)

Ok, I started here. Tucker Day 11 on MP.

The first thing I did was document anything that looked like it could be Th1 symptoms that I have observed in "Tucker" since I got him.  I started an MP daily log.

I didn't, (and still don't) know if dogs can handle Benicar or if helps them with IP and inflamation.

With all that said, I started Tucker with 1/4 Benicar q6h.  He should be a 50lb Standard Poodle but now weighs 72lbs (thyroid not working).  He did good for 2 days with that dosing so I ramped him up to 1/2 Benicar q6h (max dose for his weight, I think).  Still doing fine, day 9 at max dose.

Day 2 he had shooting diarrhoea (past IP, not from Benicar) so I started him on Mino 25cc q48h and Pepsid AC.  Diarrhea cleared and so far, so good.

I continue to keep a daily log on him and the cat along with myself of course.
So far, I can see occasional fatigue but he still plays and interacts well.

I watch the whites of his eyes and tongue color for IP.  Eyes should be white not riddled with red lines.  Tongue shoud be nice pink, (get a baseline even if its a picture to keep tract).  If you pressure touch pink gums, color should return to normal pink, fast (get a base line) within 1/2-1 second.

I put Tucker on raw food also.  Raw chicken thighs (with bones) and raw (chicken, buffalo, lamb, beef, duck) and vegetable burgers.  You have to experiment and find what works for your dogs and your budget.  Chicken is cheapest in frozen bulk.  Very little cooked meat.  It helps that he loves it.  No kibble if possible, too much D and too hard to digest.

There is a store here called "The Raw Connection".  Maybe there is something close to you.  Human grade food, no grains.  One kibble that does not fortify dog food is called "Natures Logic"  No grain, no added Vitamin D.  (The only dog food that I have found without added D)  Believe me I have looked.  If you find any other, or cat food, please let me know.

Tucker was diagnosed Hypothyroid 2 weeks ago. No previous diagnostic tests.
He was neutered about 9 months ago.
He showed signs of stomach discomfort since he was a puppy by pacing the yard continuously, compulsively. Especially prior to defecating.
He was always hot and overheated easily.

I have documented about 20 other Th1 symptoms over his 6 years of life that I will share if you would like.

I am not a vet and again, this is an experiment. I do not know how this will work out. I am happy to try to answer questions.

Best wishes for you and your pets, Taryn  :):)

Thank you, it is interesting for me and others to follow the reaction so you may write down all main symtoms that has returned one or more times, or single episodes with many symtoms.

Our second poodle was sick since very young puppy. Mainly ears, eyes, anal glands and intestines, and later diagnosed as hyperallergic. We gave her Hill´s vet.presription c/d and later d/d.
But now I have found a cheaper alternativ that is even better, but is not sold in the States. It is called Standardt. They add pulver egg and it works fine. Most important is that it is not anything artificial. Rice and lamb basically.

She is not on the MP. She is only three years old so it might have to be done later.
We do not have Benicar in Sweden so I have to scrape. :)
