The curezone article is a little misleading where it says that the Microbiota causes the release of 1,25-D.

Their primary disease-causing effect is to reduce the operational effectiveness of the VDR nuclear receptor by causing less receptors to be made (down-regulation), and blocking those which are made (with ligands). It is likely they also cause the receptors to be broken apart more quickly.

One effect of this is that the 1,25-D level rises within the cells, as the VDR cannot produce a key enzyme, CYP24, which is needed to break apart excess amounts of 1,25-D. The microbiota may also induce expression of the hydroxylase enzymes, but the primary problem is that the VDR becomes dysfunctional :)
