Lee, There are so many things attributed to aging that Dr. Marshall says is really Th1 that I keep hoping our hair loss is one thing that will return to a somewhat better condition.  Mine was in great shape when I began the protocol.

When I was very young I had golden blonde, natural curly hair (I still have a lock of it, and it truly is golden).  I got ringworm in my scalp (from a cat) and had to have my head shaved.  When it grew back it was dark, and straight as a board.  In any case my scalp must be getting rid of bacteria now, as it also itches a lot, which would indicate IP---something must be happening there.

I think thick hair ran/runs in our family.  Both my daughters have such thick hair that it's hard to get your hand around it.  My oldest could never get a perm because there wasn't enough room on her head for the number of permanent rods needed.

The hair follicles have been noted as being a great place for pathogens to take up residence, but also, the signals to tell the follicles what "season" they are in (growth, shed, dormant, regrowth) are dependent on a working VDR, plus all the endocrine organs. So, we do have some hope.

As for the thyroid medications affecting it. Yes, maybe that's part of the puzzle. The natural balance of homeostasis in the body is beautiful like a symphony. I guess our bodies are more like a junior high band practice... not as much coordination of the parts! :D

That's hilarious!  I have to say though, that school bands these days are better than in my day.  Back then they were enough to make one's ears cringe.

And, about the hair---I'll continue to try and have hope that it will get better.  Thanks Joyful.

NEWS!  I got a really short haircut this week and the gal cutting it has known me and my hair for 30-some years.  She was shocked that I had let it get so long ...
She took 5-6 " off and voila' it responded fantastic!!!   She was sure I had too much stress on the follicles ...being too long ....heavy and being on meds.  Since I have washed it several times and lost only a minimal amount of hair!  I am one "happy camper" for now ....  Lee

I am continuing to experience hair loss, but that seems to be the least of my problems when managing IP as it is very slow. I don't think I could notice whether I slowed IP enough to stop the hair loss.

I have started to experience a little more hair loss ...again ...:(  I just got my recent blood tests back this week showing I am still way over treated for thyroid ....:X  This is the second time this summer.  My former doc took 6 1/2 weeks to let me know I was using almost twice the needed amount of synthroid.  I will not being seeing him again thank goodness!!  I ran to my MP doc after cutting this med in half and my TSH was still 0.09!  I know this takes time to regulate so I am holding at the half.  It is exciting to think I maybe be able to half that soon too ....:D

I am sure IP can cause hair loss!  I wonder about increased Vit D and hair loss ....  Mine more than doubled this summer living so near the water and having a pool as my back yard.  The reflections of the sun would get me several times per day no matter how many hats and glasses I adorned ...:P   When I turned my back on the pool then I had the bay and a pond with the marsh looking at me ...:?

Needless to say this is not a healthy envirionment, no matter how beautiful it is, for folks with th1!  Lucky it is a rental and we can move soon ....  As for my hair I will have to keep it shorter than I like and try new hair styles as short does not look good on me ...nor does BALD ....  Lee

I'm somewhat convinced that it's Armour thyroid that is causing my hair loss.  When I stopped taking it for a while my hair seemed to begin thickening again, and there weren't gobs of it in my hairbrush.  Then when I started taking thyroid once again, it began to thin.
I had hoped that my thyroid would be better regulated by the MP, so I could give up supplementing but so far no luck in that department.

Maybe it is IP that is causing it and the other is coincidence.  I guess I'll never know.

It must be hard living in such a sunny environment when you know what it can do to you.  I know that I still try to avoid it as much as possible even though it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.  Habit I think, but maybe not a bad one.  I just had my 25D tested and it's <4.  I wondered if it would ever get there.

Yeaaa Jan for getting "it" down that low ...:D  Not an easy feat in summer as I well know!  I wonder if you have Hasimoto's too where the thyroid levels can go back and forth depending on the amount of inflammation at any given time ...  Wish we had a home test for this so we could tell what is going on daily or at least weekly.  Then we could adapt our meds!  Thyroid is just toooooooooo complicated for this!
But I am going to keep my meds as low as I dare ...because being over medicated for thyroid makes one feel real crummy with hot flashes and of course hair loss ...:X  Throw in IP then it becomes a real challenge!!   Losing it but cooling ...lol ... Lee

Lee, I just had to laugh at myself.  I was looking for something else and read last months post here, where I said pretty much the same thing I just said.  I'd forgotten that I'd posted that.

:D Jan ...must be my mind-fog too as it seemed interesting and new to me :D

I am afraid I am repeating myself on this subject as I go in such vicious circles with the thyroid replacement, hair loss and IP!  I thought for sure once I got my hair cut off it had stabilized but within 2-3 weeks it was just as bad as ever ....  Here I go again .....lol   Lee

Your doctor may allow for weekly thyroid testing and it might be something to consider if it is affordable to you.

My hair was thinning for decades, and what was left turning white....
On my last day at work this year I went about to farewell everyone who I had worked with.

During the day someone said "What have you done to your hair?"
I passed it off with something inconsequential
and only realised the significance of the question too late to do a 'promo' for the MP
:.-)

When I was first diagnosed with MCTD, my dr put me on plaquinil.  Within 2 months of starting it my hair and nails had become thin and brittle.  The nails are a bit better but I'm not sure about the hair.  My scalp stopped itching with the MP.  I too have been hoping my hair quantity would come back to normal.  I'm only 5 months in the MP.  I have time.
